It's More Than You Think: One DRI, Many Roles

比你想的还要多:一个负责人,身兼好几个角色。

In plain English

DRI means "directly responsible individual". It is the one person whose name sits on the result. Most people hear it and picture one job title. When you run a business alone, it is never one job. You are the boss, the seller, the teacher, the finance person and the delivery person, all at the same time. AI can now do a lot of the work inside each of those roles. It cannot answer for the result. That part stays yours.

TL;DR

A DRI is not one role. In a one-person company it is every role, stacked on one person. AI takes the doing inside each role. You keep two things in every role: what "done" looks like, and the final yes. The more roles AI takes, the clearer your real job becomes.

The title is the small part

Say "I'm the one responsible" and it sounds like one thing.

It isn't. Under that one sentence sits a whole list of roles nobody sees.

What people see

"I run my own business."

What is actually underneath
The bossThe sellerThe teacherThe content teamThe finance personThe delivery person

That is my list. I am an AI consultant and an AI educator. I have no staff. Every one of those roles is mine, every week.

My roles, honestly

Here is what each role looks like for me, and where AI now sits inside it.

The boss

AI does
Keeps the goals and the week's priorities in one place.
I own
Which goal matters most right now.

The seller

AI does
Turns meeting notes into a summary and a first draft of the proposal.
I own
The price, and what I promise the client.

The teacher

AI does
Helps shape the lesson, the slides and the activities.
I own
What the learners walk out able to do.

The content team

AI does
Drafts scripts and captions, and checks them before I record.
I own
What goes out in my name. I post every piece myself.

The finance person

AI does
Tracks who has paid and how far I am from the target.
I own
Every ringgit that goes in or out.

The delivery person

AI does
Keeps each client's work in its own folder and tracks what is due.
I own
Whether the client got what they paid for.

Look at the right side of every card. The work moved. The responsibility did not.

AI can take the role. It can't take the blame, and it can't take the credit either.

Why it is more than you think

When I started handing work to AI, I thought my job would shrink.

It did the opposite. Each role I handed over came back to me as a question. Is this proposal right? Is this caption true? Has this client really been looked after?

The doing got lighter. The deciding got bigger. Six roles means six places where I have to know what "good" looks like, because the AI will happily hand me something that only looks good.

So I set one rule for myself. Nothing gets paid, posted or sent without me. AI can prepare all of it. The last yes is mine.

Hand to AI
  • The first draft
  • The sorting and the tracking
  • The reminders
  • The checking against a rule you wrote
Keep for yourself
  • What "done" looks like
  • The final yes
  • Anything with money, a client or your name on it

Being the DRI is not doing everything

This is the part people get wrong. Being responsible for every role does not mean doing every role by hand.

Doing everything by hand is how solo owners burn out. Doing nothing and trusting the machine is how they get embarrassed in front of a client.

The middle is simple. Give AI the work. Keep the standard and the signature.

Try this this week

  • List your roles. Every hat you wore last week, even the small ones. Most owners find five or more.
  • Write one line per role: what does "done" look like? If you cannot write it, AI cannot hit it.
  • Write one line per role: what must always come back to me? That is your line. Everything below it can be handed over.
  • Hand over one role's work. Just one. Keep the deciding. See how it feels after a week.

FAQ

What does DRI mean?
DRI stands for directly responsible individual. It is the one person whose name sits on a result. When something goes right or wrong, everyone knows who to ask. It is not a rank. It is a promise to carry the outcome.
Is a DRI just another word for manager?
No. A manager looks after people and process. A DRI looks after one result, from start to finish, even when the work crosses many roles. In a one-person company there is nobody to manage, but there is still a result that needs one owner.
Can AI be the DRI?
No. AI can do the work inside a role: draft, sort, check, remind. But it cannot stand in front of a client and answer for what happened. That part stays with a person.
Do I need a team to work like a DRI?
No. If you run a business alone, you are already the DRI for every result in it. The question is whether you do every role by hand, or hand the work in each role to AI and keep only the deciding.
Where do I start?
Write down every role you play in a normal week. For each one, write what done looks like and what must always come back to you. Then hand one role's work to AI and keep the decision.
